living with disappointment isn't very difficult; once you get it out
Monday, December 1, 2008 @ 6:21 AM
Me is here!
Went for Twilight screening today with Sue Lynn and Sweet Mae...It wasn't awesome and neither did it suck....BADLY at least...It wasn't perfect but it wasn't above the level of succk.

Apology first to all Twilight fans who have read the book and fakely adore the movie just because of Edward Cullen and not because of the qualities of the movie. Also to the fans who have not read the book and love the movie, my sincere apologies since once people manage to either Google or Yahoo blogs for posts on Twilight, I'm sure my cBox will be spammed with haters screaming their insults at me.
Believe me, it has happened before and it was pretty annoying.
Okay, firstly, the opening had already confused me from the start because it was jumpy and moving too fast to understand...but thank God for Kristen Stewart's narration. If not, no one would have understood anything.
Scenery was good at the beginning and Forks was as un-sunny as I expected it to be and well, it actually is like that. You can Wikipedia.org it. It's actually quite a pretty place. Anyway, I didn't expect Bella's truck to loook so small. I expected it to be a much more heavy duty vehicle.
The starting was pretty mild and there's not much criticism or praise that I can offer that except for the scenery which I think the director managed to make look gorgeous and yet maintaining the beauty.
As I said, the starting was actually quite mild and pretty enjoyable. The classroom scene of Edward ignoring Bella was just perfect. And when he introduces himself after his long absence of going to Tanya and her family (which wasn't mentioned) during Science class was capturing and one of the few parts that stayed true to the book and it's humour except for the addition of the Golden Onion award to the pair who managed to finish first which both of them obviously won.
As the relationship blossomed it grew pretty un-interesting as they focused less on the flow of the story and only did the vital parts which are actually not very much connected and uninformative to those who have not read the book. It is also too fast-paced with many long parts being cut short and irrelevant parts being added to the show like for example the greenhouse scene and the cooking of the Italian food by the Cullen family for Bella when she visits their house.
Before I jump to the visiting scene, let me head over to the forest+meadow+running+confrontation scene. And before that, I need to comment on Jacob Black and his very boring and short presence and his portrayal of the character. Supposing to unapprove of Bella and Edward's relationship, he showed none of it in the end when he brings his father's warning to Bella. And dude, his hair...Wth did you do to it? It's so shaggy and messy and looks like it had never met a comb and where's the russet brown that his wolf is supposed to possess? Maybe that was the portrayal that you wanted to give those who have never met the book but could you at least make it seem unfake and when they were at La Push...his trying to tell Bella of the legend of the pale ones was so terrible that I'm sure that if it wasn't Kristen's character to understand, I would have been super blurr.
Oh yes, one tiny detail...What happened to Bella's ancient computer that takes uber-long to fire up? Instead, she has a high-tech Apple laptop that is so sleek and shiny that it has no relation to the ancient and slow computer. Hello? And what happened to the hand-quilted quilt and the child's decorations in the room? It looks like a teenager lived in it instead of a young kid...????
Now, back to the meadow scene...It started off with Bella's un-nonchalant confrontation with Edward in the forest that was super random and terribly boring that I cannot remember what happened before they entered the forest...Soorry.
Kristen did not possess the nonchalance of Bella when questioning about his age....And she actually looked frightened though she claimed to not be afraid of Edward when it showed clearly on her face. O.O
And the meadow scene which was supposed to be a nice friendly hike turned just jumped from the confrontation to Edward being P.Oed and dragging Bella and wanting to show her what he really looks like in the Sun.
He just simply throws her onto his back and while Bella is supposed to feel queasy and frightened about hitting a tree while fascinated, Stewart performed only the latter and not the first three...O.O Hello? And Edward was supposed to be joking and playful when he shows her his speed, yet Robert Pattinson was pissed looking???
And the diamond-ness of his skin just looked like someone flung glitter onto him. It looked nothing like diamonds...It was gold, not silver...I guess it would not stick out even if he went into the Sun....
And the meadow scene...Because Malaysia is stupidly conservative...All sexy, stormy kissing scenes have been removed and we've been left with nothing but boredom. Those who have read the book would be wondering where are all the sexy and stormy kiss scenes from the book while others are content with it. Firstly, it was rated a PG-13 but then they opened it up, cut out the scenes and walah, a rating of U...
So there were no interesting meadow scenes where Edward and Bella's love and Edward's passion for Bella is proven. And while in America, the director has claimed that a girl can go back 7-8 times to watch it, I wouldn't look a second time at it even if I was forced to. American females can go back that many times because of the sensual scenes but Malaysians are stuck with a peck on the forehead and a kiss on the neck??? Wth??? I paid to watch those scenes.
And which brings us to the house scene where the family finally gets to use their kitchen to cook an Italian meal for Bella which ends with Rosalie crushing the salad bowl because she's pissed with Bella's involvement in the family secret.
Firstly, the house is nothing like the book described. It looks so modern that it resembles a holiday house in the mountains...It looks like Kim Possible's house. No kidding. And what's worse, it's not Victorian with a veranda and French windows and a curving main staircase which the Cullen family descends from. Wth? Where's the perfect elegance that they're supposed to possess? Thrown away to make way for more modern and uninteresting and common settings that are helping to portray that the Cullen family have adapted to the 21st century. O.o I mean, it's good that they're trying to do that but please retain the elegance that the vampires are supposed to possess and the uncannny beauty and the grace and perfection and calmness that they are supposed to have instead of trying to make them more human than they are supposed to be...
And where's the pristine white of the Cullen house? When he first stepped into the building, I instantly noticed that everything was so modern and decorated with beautiful stuff that hail from the 21st century and decorated to the 21st century style. There was no curving staircase and the pristine whiteness was just not there from the moment they stepped it. Yes, as they accended the stairs as big as mine with glass railings, the white began to show but it wasn't there at first glance. That wasn't a very promising Cullen house.
And another devastating part was that there was no indication of Carlisle's part and the Volturi and the Beautiful Four...There was no history and story telling. There wasn't even a visit to his study...O.O That was quite disappointing.
And Edward's room...Now that was an understatement to his original gorgeous and humonguous-ness...It was cluttered with books, customary to the Edward Cullen but it was pretty miniscule and small. Furthermore, there was a flat screen telly in the room which is never supposed to be there...=='
Now, at first when I saw the trailer, I hated the part that was totally irrelevant to the book which is the scene where he jumps out the window with Bella on his back...
The trailer didn't show how awesome that scene would be but it was entrance even one who didn't approve of it...Namely, me. He leapt from tree to tree, climbing them and then jumping till they came to one tree and rested on the top, clinging around it and just revelled in each other's beauty.
One reason I like about it is the beautiful scenery that boasts the lush nature of Forks. The scenery was gorgeous. Reason No. 2: One of the parts where Pattinson/Edward smiled the most gorgeous and real smile. None like the practised smiles that actors whould have. The smile touched his eyes and was perfect Pattinson/Edward...And the chemistry between them was just magic!
But surprisingly, Sue Lynn and Sweet Mae and I were trying to figure out if that scene was green screened or they really flew the couple up to the tree tops because it was at the tip of the pine tree and at you know, the tip is always more fragile and thinner than the base...I kept wondering why wouldn't the tree bend over with the weight and came to the conclusion that it was green-screened...
Then it started getting boring and too fast paced starting off with the baseball scene...It began good but there was no proof of Edward's speed and that was the only time when Jasper looked breathtakingly handsome. With the baseball cap on because if concealed part of his ugly curly un-Jasper hair...=='
James and Victoria and Laurent emerged and trouble started. James was GORGEOUS! He made me almost swoon. He would have made the perfect Edward...but he was more rugged that the Carlisle's calm and Carlisle was much, much more handsome than he was.
Okay...
The running away to Vancouver scene was TERRIBLE! The leaving the house and fooling the dad scene was awesome...Perfectly executed but the trip there wasn't very prolonged and it was quite short. There was no fooling Edward at the airport...First day there and she already left to face James. Furthermore, the ballet studio wasn't closed up but the ancient beauty of the studio was breathtaking.
That scene was more than expected but quite beautiful. Heaps of action and mirrors smashing and broken windows and blood but that's for the enjoyment of the male species.
I shall not say much about this scene because it was actually quite good and second favourite to the tree scene. Bella's excruciating pain was performed perfectly and I loved it...because she did it perfectly though slightly over the top.
End of all the action and closing to the story.
Prom...
The gorgeous theme was Monte Carlo and though it didn't stay true to the book's theme of the gym, that isn't why I found the prom scenes to my disliking.
Firstly, there was no Barbie doll dress-up by Alice and spending the whole day in secrecy from her...I so badly wanted to see that scene because it would be a beautiful ending to the story.
Furthermore, Bella's dress was nowhere as gorgeous as the original...Hell, it wasn't even the same colour. It was plain. Blue. But looked good on her. Maybe the director was trying to prove that she has no enthusiasm for the prom but the white cardigan with gems sewn on contradicted the idea.
The only good part was Bella's cast though that also wasn't much of a restriction because it didn't add to her looking and acting and being a clutz and through the prom, there was no indication that her cast was being used as an excuse to dance...In fact, she accepted Edward's offer to dance. ==' O.o O.O
And there was no Rosalie and Emmett and Jasper and Alice dancing...Wth? They weren't even present.
That's the movie general of my rant post.
Here's my character/actor post.
First off, Kristen Stewart's portrayal of Bella Swan was mediocre but maybe that's what the director told her to do. There were only two instances that proved her clutz-iness and two...WTH? Bella's one of the most clumsiest women on the face of the Earth. And, she always seemed to be in a permanent frown...She never seems to look happy or even normal...She just seems like she's always worried and it kinda pisses me off. She doesn't seem to portray the correct emotions...It's always the same look. Can't blame her for the director's direction though...If it is the director's fault that she has the same look each time. <.< >.> *looking around shiftily*
Robert Pattinson...Hmmm. Well, I'm not going to say that his portrayal was flawless and please all the females out there who will criticise me because I'm ranting about Robert Pattinson/Edward Cullen...So wtf? It's my blog. My life. Honestly, I think you're all lowlifes to fall in love with a person you hardly know just because he's goodlooking or just because he plays your favourite character whom you also claim to be in love with...like someone I know very well and am not afraid to expose because she hates me and I hate her...Mutual agreeance. Her initials: MKT...Her name Mak Kit Teng. And i don't give a fcuk if I pronounce it wrongly. You're just some girl whose hoping that Edward Cullen will come to life and sweep you off your feet..You're wrong. If you're hoping that Pattinson will kiss you senseless, think again, princess. He won't even give a freaking damn about you even if you threw yourself at his feet.
Anyway, back to my original ranting. Edward Cullen. His face is always petrifying and is only beautiful when he smiles. He's always looks like he's in constant fear and his eyes are always wide opened in shock and his skin isn't flawlessly pale. It's pasty and sickly. The biggest disappointment next to his skin is his hair. It doesn't posses any bronze-ness in it. And instead of Mike Newton spiking his hair to resemble Edward's, Pattinson's hair looked fake and purposefully spiked. His eyes barely looked golden and they had to zoom in to show that they were golden.
Okeh...Emmett...Wasn't shown much in the movie but he was the picture of Cullen perfection.
Rosalie was never a character I paid much attention to but she was portrayed very badly in the movie. She was not tall. She was not gorgeous. Her skin wasn't pale. She didn't look coldly beautiful. She didn't look like a bitch. She wasn't the Cullen picture of calm perfection. She didn't have undescribable beauty. She didn't have the figure of a model/goddess...Why did they even choose her?
Jasper: Bad hair. Doesn't speak much. I don't think I heard him say anything. Looks like he's in pain. Very uptight. Again, terrible hair. Worse than Nicholas Cage's hair in Next. That's all I can say.
Alice: Possess the adorable-ness of Alice. Doesn't appear much so not much to judge from. Again, cute. Doesn't possess a musical voice. Doesn't walk with a hyper skip.
Carlisle: Hawt! The second picture of Cullen perfection. Perfect pale vampire skin. Gorgeous blonde hair. Graceful. Eye-catching. Everything a Cullen is said to be but then, he perfected it before passing it on.
Esme: Doesn't appear much. Not the sweet lady with the beautiful elegance. Looks like a typically homely mother. =='
James: One word...Hawt! And correctly portrayed.
Laurent: Who? Huh? What? He barely appeared enough for me to make a proper judgement.
Victoria: Not the fiery beauty without the flaming red hair but nonetheless more gorgeous than the Cullens could ever get.
You would notice that I left out the mention of Bella's Lullaby after the hype of it all. The song. The composer. That's because I could not tell the difference between the movie music with the lullaby. There was no indication to say that this was the lullaby and the piano scene just breezed by without me realising which was the song. Honestly, the song wasn't as good as the rumoured song of The River Flows in You by Yiruma. That had more emotion and was more beautiful. Furthermore, the piano wasn't white....It was BLACK!!! Honestly, where is my beautiful white grand piano? Argh! I was pissed.
I think that's about all my ranting. If there is somemore that I left out, it will be in another post when I manage to remember what it is...Hehe.
Oh yes, if you had watched the movie, you would have noticed that I left out some parts. Those parts were too small and unimportant for me to note down here but I'm sure that there were a few flaws which I passed on.
Now:
I'm sure that alot of people will be screaming at me for posting this with more criticism than praise and I do not care what you all will say because every person has the rights to say what they want as this is a free country and that the people and the government should allow the people to have their say. Also, since I am a large fan of the book, I expected the movie to be much better and more flowy instead of the cut and jump, cut and jump pace.
Unnecessary parts were added hence the cut and jump of the story. I understand the director's view of having the parts to add a new twist to the story but it just made the ending part more confusing and cut and jump.
Maybe I expect too much of a movie with a tiny budget but nevertheless, females over the world flock to watch it because of the book phenomenon even though there's not very good script and physical appearance of the actors. The only thing I did like about it was the cinematography and the scenery...Forks is a truly beautiful place. It boasts good cinematography which I truly appreciate.
I'm sure that loadds of Twilight fans will be ranting about my unappreciativeness to the movie but I sure do not give a damn. In fact, tell me your views. I'd be happy to hear them. It would really make my day to know what you people think.
In blogs, MSN, friendster...I've seen people say that Twilight is awesome...Twilight is the bomb...I'm going to see it again. Maybe they enjoyed it because of the kissing scenes which were cut out after the first few screeenings which invoked feelings in people.
I wonder if they have read the book before to be in love with the movie or if they are so in love with Robert Pattinson that they just can't see the movie...Not that I'm saying that everyone should see the flaws that my brain and eye register but they're so in love with Robert Pattinson that instead of 'I Love Robert Pattinson'...It's I 'Love Twilight'...Hmm...Share your views.
I'd appreaciate it.
Once again, I apologise to those whose feelings I've hurt but I have speaking rights and I shall use them to say whatever I want. There is no law for giving a bad review about anything in the world. So I cannot be charged for feeling unhappy about the movie so if you don't like me, the 'X' is in the right hand corner of this page. Tq.
Anyway, my ranting is over. I'm happy and feeling much better. Been blogging this post for about an hour...O.o Look at the length.
Ciao.
Lyn
